The Present Movement Practice
Weekly Presence Prompt
Today, we learn a quick one minute practice we can integrate into our daily lives that invites in the present moment so that we are awake and ready for any communication. We SWAY to become AWAKE in this Present Movement Practice. This practice engages our imagination, warms up our body and voice, connects us to our breath, grounds us, and plants us firmly in the present.
I do this practice first thing in the morning while I’m waiting for the kettle to boil and again as needed before a tricky conversation, before a presentation, to bring my body and mind back to a focus, to give myself a break, to wake myself up to the moment.
SWAY: the Present Movement Practice
ROOT Stand with legs shoulder-width apart and imagine roots digging down deep into the earth. Grounding us.
SAP Imagine springtime sap running up from the ground through the roots, in a great surge, flowing through every part of our body from the feet, legs, trunk, arms, hands, pouring out our fingertips and the crown of our head, lengthening our spines, with a sense of “falling up.” Expanding us in all directions.
WINDS Allow the wind to move through us, breathing from our feet to the crown of our head, inviting in the sounds of the winds sighing, humming, yawning, spiraling our joints. Loosening us.
TEMPESTS Let the storms dance us, spiraling our arms, waist, hips, shoulders in all directions, back, front, up, down, side to side, allowing the sounds to deepen. Stretching us.
RAIN From sky to earth, run our hands down our body like warm rain, from head to toe. Waking up every part of us.
THUNDER Rumble and stamp our feet. Grounding us in the moment.
AWAKE We are now ready in the present movement.

This is a great practice to start the day! I would add, on waking don’t open phone or other digital media first thing. Wait & greet oneself and the world first.
Beautiful! I just wrote about multi sensational imagination and how powerful it is! Tell us about that TREE! What in the world??
